Scholarships
EO provides three types of scholarships:
- Private school tuition to young primary and secondary aged children. This gives them the advantage of getting a good education with English that is required to be successful in secondary classes and college.
- Tuition and fees for government primary classes 1-5 grades, lower secondary for classes 6-8, secondary for classes 9-10 and for higher secondary education, class 11-12.
- College and university scholarships to students that have shown a need and successful completion of higher secondary classes. These scholarships come with the expectation that they return 10% of their future income for 10 years back to a scholarship fund to help support future students. This is a pay it forward concept and more importantly a sustainability effort. We also require community service for each year they are funded.
Supplies
Although education is free for primary and secondary government education, school supplies and school uniforms are mandatory for attendance. These supplies and uniforms typically cost about 50 dollars and are beyond the reach of the poorest Nepalese whose family income may not even reach 300 USD a year. EO helps these students attend school by providing these materials.
Women’s Empowerment
Physical disabilities are huge impediments to success in Nepal. As children they are often abandoned and left in orphanages. As adults it is unusual to find gainful employment. EO supports an educational center for the deaf that teaches sewing skills. Upon graduation these women and men receive sewing machines, quality sewing tools like scissors, and dual duty electric sewing machines that can also function as a treadle machine when power is not available. These recipients go back to their remote villages and start tailoring businesses. They are also a part of future sustainability as they will return 10% of their income back to EQ for future empowerment opportunities for the physically disabilities
Partnerships
EO looks for opportunities to partner with other NGO’s both in the United States and Nepal to further our mission of providing educational opportunities for orphans, marginalized rural youth and women.
